R and RStudio

This guide is designed to provide information about R and RStudio, including access, learning opportunities, ways to get help, and how to access data.

Help Within RStudio

Help features are built right into RStudio. To learn more about how to use these different features, check out the following links to sections from the page on “Getting Help with R” by The R Project for Statistical Computing: R Help: help() and ? and Searching for Help Within R.

Online Resources

Online resources offer different ways to get information and assistance with problems relating to programming in R.  There are countless articles and forums discussing common issues, offering solutions, and explaining the use of various functions. We recommend visiting one of the sites suggested on The R Project for Statistical Computing’s page on R Help on the Internet. The R Project also offers information about obtaining help via Stack Overflow by visiting their page on Stack Overflow.

Class-Based Support

Some classes at Mount Holyoke incorporate the use of R, and sometimes RStudio, into their curriculum. In these cases, there may be resources to receive additional support, such as office hours with the instructor or TA.

To learn about the availability of these resources, we recommend visiting your course’s Moodle page or reaching out to your instructor directly.

LITS Support

LITS support for R and RStudio is currently limited. In addition to the local RStudio server mentioned elsewhere in this guide, select staff are available to onboard users new to R, and may be able to help you  troubleshoot when issues arise in your code. You are welcome to book an appointment with Educational Technology to discuss questions you may have about R:

In addition, keep an eye on Ed Tech’s support calendar for upcoming R Office Hours.
