The Lynda materials on Adobe Illustrator will get you started if you've never used Illustrator before. There is not material specific to scientific figures, here, but learning Illustrator basics will set you up to make illustrations, and learning Photoshop basics will help you learn how to handle any image files that will later become part of your Illustrator work.
