Finding Streaming Video

Popular Streaming Services

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and other common streaming platforms only offer individual subscriptions, and do not offer subscriptions to libraries or institutions. When an individual signs up for Netflix or another streaming subscription, they sign an agreement. It is a violation of most individual subscription agreements to share login information and content with others, so it would be unlawful for LITS to have an individual subscription and share that login information with the MHC community.

A limited number of Netflix original educational documentaries are available for one-time educational screenings. See the Netflix website for more information.

LITS has access to many other streaming platforms. If you find a title on a platform that offers only individual subscriptions, please let us know. We can work with you to find possible alternative solutions.

FAQs about Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Q: Does LITS have a Netflix (Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc.) account for faculty to use in classes?

A: No, Netflix and other similar services offer only individual subscriptions, not institutional subscriptions.

Q: Can I share my personal login with my class?

A: No, when you signed up for your individual account, you agreed to licensing terms that will not allow you to share your login information or content.

Q: What about Netflix documentaries? Can I show those in my class?

A: A limited number of Netflix original educational documentaries are available for one-time educational screenings. See the Netflix website for more information.

Q: Can I login and show a film during class?

A: No, the Netflix End User License Agreementwhich you agreed to when you created an account, specifies that the account is "only for your personal, non-commercial use." Netflix is not alone here; Amazon Prime, Hulu, and other personal streaming vendors do not grant rights for institutional or educational use.

This is important because licenses overrule copyright exemptions. Showing your personal DVD during class is covered by a specific copyright exemption (Section 110), and showing clips can be covered by fair use (Section 107). However, you cannot stream videos via a personal subscription in your classroom when the license prohibits such viewings.

Q: A film or show is essential for my class. What are my options?

A: Contact us! We may be able to find it on another platform. Check with your students who may have individual subscriptions. Check AVON, Kanopy, and Docuseek for alternative titles.
