Print Indexes:

  • Anthropological Literature 1979 - 1983, 1989 - 2005. Indexes journal articles and essays held by the Havard Tozzer Library. Focuses on archaeology, biological and physical anthropology, cultural and social anthropology, and linguistics.  Only available in print =Main Ref. GN 1 .A57  
  • Human Relations Area Files (HRAF) The HRAF files consist of thousands of books, articles, reports, etc., in the field of ethnography. Until 1991, these were distributed on microfiche cards. UMass has the HRAF microfiche set. The following are guides to the files:
    • Outline of cultural materials  GN 345.3 O95 1982 Folio (stacks)
    • Outline of world cultures  GN 345.3 M87 1983 Ref.

  Sociology focused databases

  • Sociological Abstracts- A primary access point to sociology journal articles; online indexing includes 1963 and forward.  Earlier years, dating from 1953, are available in print:

    Sociological Abstracts - Williston Stacks, Level 3, HM 1 .S67 Folio
  • Annual Reviews Index  - Offers keyword searching of titles included in the Annual Reviews series including the Annual Review of Sociology. Annual Review articles survey and highlight the literature in a particular discipline.
  • Family & Society Studies Worldwide - indexing publications from a wide range of social science disciplines including anthropology, sociology, psychology, demography, health sciences, education, economics, law, history and social work.

Other Databases to try

  • Social Sciences Citation Index (ISI) 1956 - present. Provides bibliographic information to over 1,725 social science journals spanning 50 disciplines.  Special feature: users can follow the cited references of one article to locate additional relevant sources. 
  • PsycInfo 1970 - present.  Published research in Psychology. Linked from PsycINFO is access to PsycARTICLES, an ejournal collection that contains recent issues of journals published by the APA.
  • Academic Search Premier (EBSCO):  scholarly, multi-disciplinary database containing full text for more than 3,600 scholarly publications, including more than 2,700 peer-reviewed publications. 
  • International Bibliography of Social Sciences 1951-present. A comprehensive online index of journal articles and books in Economics, Sociology, Politics and Anthropology. The IBSS includes the Int'l Bib. of Social and Cultural Anthropology which we also have in print (older years)...    
  • Ethnic NewsWatch - An interdisciplinary, bilingual (English and Spanish) full text database of newspapers, magazines and journals from ethnic, minority and native presses.
  • Population Index- A tool published by the Office of Population Research, Princeton University, to access scholarly literature on populations worldwide. "It presents an annotated bibliography of recently published books, journal articles, working papers, and other materials on population topics."
  • Google Scholar: books and articles indexed by Google (see preferences to turn on MHLinks button!)
