Welcome to the Music Research Guide

This guide shows the best places to start your research in Music.  Access tools to find audio recordings, scores, background information, books, articles and databases, and citing and copyright tools.

Use the tabs at the top of the page to start your research

Every subject area has a LITS liaison who specializes in the technology tools and library materials used in that discipline.  Don't hesitate to contact any liaison to request a reference consultation or a bibliographic instruction session at the library for your class, ask a research question, or to suggest purchasing books or other materials to add to our collection.

Chrissa Godbout is the LITS liaison for Music
and is here to help with Music research

Music Materials in the Library

Books, scores, recordings, and video in the areas of music and dance are located in the Music and Dance Library in Pratt Hall (the music building).

Music materials have call numbers that start with "M":

  • M + number   = Music (printed and manuscript music, facsimiles, DVDs of
operas & other performances, documentaries, etc.)
  • ML + number = Literature on Music (journals, libretti, biographies, history)
  • MT + number = Musical Instruction and Study (theory, performance practice)
  • Specific categories under the M, ML and MT classifications [PDF]
