Linking to Google Drive folders or documents from within Moodle

All folders and files created in or uploaded to Google Drive have a URL (web address).  To find the URL, in Google Drive:
  1. While logged into Google Drive, select (click once to highlight) the folder or file you wish to use from the list of folders and files in your drive, then click on the Share icon

  2. A "Share with others" window will open.  Click on the "Get shareable link" icon
Get shareable linkand copy the URL that appears in the "Link sharing on" box:

(Note: If desired, at this point you can also use the "Anyone at Mount Holyoke College with the link can view" drop-down menu to modify the access settings, or the People box to enter email addresses of specific people with whom you'd like to share the folder or file.)

Once you have the folder or file's URL, you can add it to your Moodle course site as follows:

  1. Log into Moodle and navigate to your course site.
  2. Click the "Turn editing on" button.
  3. Select a block (week or topic section) to add the link to.
  4. In that block, click on "Add an activity or resource."
  5. In the Add an activity or resource window that opens, select URL (all the way at the bottom of the list of options) then click on the Add button.
  6. In the Adding a new URL screen that opens, enter a name for the folder or file in the Name box.  In the External URL box paste the URL you copied from Google Drive's sharing settings.  Not mandatory but suggested: in the Options section, use the Display drop-down menu to select New Window (when a user clicks on the link you're adding, instead of opening in the same browser window as Moodle the linked page will open in its own new window):

  7. When you've filled in all the mandatory fields (red with asterisk) and modified any additional settings desired, scroll to the bottom of the "Adding a new URL" page and click on the "Save and return to course" or "Save and display button" to finish adding the URL.
