The web sites of cultural institutions like libraries, museums, and universities are good places to check for these kinds of collections (though you'll find not many offer collections quite as extensive as this one!).

Search the library catalog for documentaries and period films using the Advanced search form which allows you to restrict your search by Format to "DVDs, Videos, Films & Slides." You can also choose to search by Genre and enter “documentary” to limit your results to non-fiction film.
This free database is good for identifying useful films (you can even search by plot - see Advanced search for more search options) as well as getting additional information (director, producer, cast, release date, etc.) that may help you buy or borrow a copy.
Search the library catalog for audio recordings using the Advanced Search form, which allows you to restrict your search by Format to "Sound recordings (all)" or by "CDs," "Cassettes," "LPs," or "Spoken Word" individually.
