CHEM 160L: Integrated Introduction to Biology and Chemistry

Biol/Chem 160 Lab, Fall 2018, instructor Meghan Kelly and LITS liaison Sarah Oelker.

Researching bean beetles

The scientific name of the bean beetle is Callosobruchus maculatus. It's also known as the cowpea weevil or the cowpea seed beetle

Integrated Taxonomy Information System record on Callosobruchus maculatus.

If you aren't finding enough articles when you search on the entire species name, it can be useful to search for simply the genus name, which in this case is Callosobruchus

Behaviors that you might be studying:

Bean choice

Food choice

Egg-laying

Your project might involve these species of bean:

Azuki or Adzuki beans (Phaseolus radiatus)

Pigeon peas or gandules (Cajanus cajan)

Cowpeas (genus Vigna)

Chickpeas or garbanzo beans (Cicer arietinum)

Check with your lab instructor about the behaviors and bean species available for your project.
